If your business plan doesn’t fit on one page, it’s hard to execute. The Lean Business Canvas forces clarity… fast. Here’s my favorite way to build it in Excel or Google Sheets with a printable, boardroom-ready layout.

This model is ready to be printed in Landscape format.
To make it easier to fill-up the Lean Business Canvass, guide questions will pop-up when you select the cell.
If you want to plan for different ideas, you may make a copy of the template then rename the new sheet to the name of the idea.
But what is the Lean Business Canvas?
A one-page plan across nine blocks: Problem, Solution, Unique Value Proposition, Unfair Advantage, Customer Segments, Key Metrics, Channels, Cost Structure, Revenue Streams. It helps you define hypotheses, prioritize tests, and communicate the model crisply.
The Lean Business Canvass is divided into categories and more subcategories.
UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION
Single, clear, compelling message that states why you are different and worth paying attention.
High-Level Concept
List your X for Y analogy e.g. YouTube = Flickr for videos
PROBLEM
List your top 1-3 problems
Existing Alternatives
List how these problems are solved today.
SOLUTION
Outline a possible solution for each problem.
KEY METRICS
List the key numbers that tell you how your business is doing.
Cost Structure
List your fixed and variable costs.
UNFAIR ADVANTAGE
Something that cannot easily be bought or copied.
CUSTOMER SEGMENTS
List your target customers and users.
Early Adopters
List the characteristics of your ideal customers
CHANNELS
List your path to customers (inbound or outbound)
Revenue Streams
List your sources of revenue.
If you are doing a marketplace platform or any SaaS business, this is the right Business Canvass for you.
Why a spreadsheet template?
- Familiar and flexible
- Easy to print/export as PDF
- Works for solo founders or teams (version control, comments)
- Integrates with your existing planning stack
Inside the template
- Blank Canvas (clean, distraction-free)
- Guided Canvas (one-line prompts per block)
- Sample – Filled (so you can see “good” vs. “vague”)
How to fill it in (10–20 minutes)
- Problem → Solution: List top 1-3 pains, then your crisp solution.
- UVP: Your one-sentence pitch to say why you’re worth attention.
- Unfair Advantage: What can’t be bought or copied?
- Customer Segments & Early Adopters: Who feels the pain most?
- Channels: How will they hear about you?
- Key Metrics: The few numbers that prove progress.
- Costs vs. Revenues: Make assumptions explicit.
